E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!
Many of the old rules and limitations no longer apply to this new form of marketing, which seeks to talk with, rather than at, the reader. At last count, the Internet links some 46,318 computer networks at sites in 91 countries worldwide. More than half (27,614) the networks are in the United States; not surprisingly, some 20% of these are in California. According to the Internet Domain Survey, conducted in January 1995 by Net Wizards, some 4,852,000 host computers were linked to the Internet. The greatest percentage of these computers were being used in business (27%) and education (23%). The Internet Society estimates an average of 10 users per host. Total users on the net are approaching 50 million, with another million or so getting connected monthly.

A coalition of furniture manufacturers plans to target imports of Chinese wood bedroom furniture in an antidumping petition to be filed this fall with the Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. The committee, which covers virtually all price points within the bedroom furniture category; alleges that Chinese manufacturers are selling products at artificially low prices. This dumping, the committee claims, is crippling the ability of domestic manufacturers to fairly compete and forcing many to curtail or close their U.S. manufacturing operations. If the petition is successful, bedroom furniture imported from China will be subject to antidumping duties.
MFI YESTERDAY blamed a dire end to its key winter sale for plunging like-for-like sales at its core UK retail business. The furniture group, which just three weeks ago guided the market to expect sales to recover, said its “outdated” bedroom ranges had put customers off buying its products. Its shares plunged 3 per cent to 140p. Like-for-like sales across its UK estate fell by 4 per cent from Boxing Day to 21 March, exacerbating the 3 per cent decline that the group reported last month. David Jeary, at Credit Suisse First Boston, said same-store sales must have fallen by 6 to 7 per cent in March, against the managements hopes that they would be flat against the previous year.
Chains Expand RTA Furniture Skus; Add Bedroom Sets New lines of bedroom furniture aimed at te discount market and the continued growing acceptance of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture among consumers has created a category that buyers say all but sells itself. Even more important to discount store buyers, the RTA consumer is evidently willing to trade up to higher prices as long as the product exhibits upgraded style and quality.

Business Editors/Transportation Writers BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–April 29, 2004 Two billion Americans ride in a taxicab or limousine each year, which accounts for more than $10 billion in industry-wide revenue per year(2). The most popular reasons Americans hire a taxicab or limousine service include: general transportation, rides to and from the airport and special occasions such as weddings(3).
There was high excitement when 200 pupils attended the wedding of two fellow students. But the marriage was only a mock-up organised as part of GCSE religious education curriculum at Houghton Kepier School, Houghton-le-Spring. The schools head of religious education and personal social health and citizenship education Eileen Osborne explained the event had been devised to help Key Stage Four students with the Christianity unit of their GCSE studies.
It could be a special occasion, an exceptional client, a vital business meeting or a solemn funeral. No matter what the reason, or where it takes you, hiring a limousine for transportation adds the extra touch that says, “This is important to me.” “To the owners and drivers at Extreme Limousine, transportation is not just a job; they understand that they are adding to your experience,” says Extreme Limousine customer Barb Richards, program director at WAJI radio in Fort Wayne. “We had been in a number of weddings where the hired limousines came late or provided bad service, and we knew we could do it better,” says Balliet. “We did our due diligence research and took a crash course in business plan development.”

The acres of carpeting at a typical hotel represent a significant expense, and most hoteliers prefer to keep that investment looking as good as possible for as long as possible. Typically, hotel staff members clean carpeting, according to Greg Rosenblatt, administrative manager for Stark Carpets. Hotel personnel should consult with a qualified carpet cleaner to develop a service plan thats appropriate for the type of carpet and its usage. With the right cleaning schedule and methods, carpet can be kept looking like new.
Carpet Cleaning Service Carpet Chem Corporation began as a familyowned and operated business venture. The owners identified a need for a quality carpet and upholstery cleaning system, and their son developed the formula for success. Today, the business has been franchised 21 times in 16 different states. Carpet Chem Corporation attributes its steady growth and financial achievements to a quality product line, through market research and an effective price strategy.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.
The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.
The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.
Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

Relationships with family and friends matter a great deal to children and are also important to long-term emotional and psychological development. The United Kingdom compares poorly in that area with other countries. Most distressingly, we have the lowest proportion reporting that their peers are kind and helpful - less than half say that is the case compared with more than 80 per cent in Switzerland.

An upscale home with ail ocean view and accessibility to shops and dining. Concierge services to assist in fulfilling those whims that urge you to go where the wind takes you - be it surfing, hiking, swimming, shopping or relaxing. Sound like a great vacation? Guess again because youre in the comfort of your own community - in your second home. In a trend that continues to grow, second homes are being viewed both as a good investment and a means to enhance ones lifestyle.
Real estate has always been a solid, safe, tangible investment, declares Christine Hrib Karpinski, author of How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner: The Complete Guide to Buy, Manage, Furnish, Rent, Maintain and Advertise Your Vacation Rental Investment. First, it usually appreciates in value. Also, there is a sense of control that doesnt exist with, say, the stock market. When you own real estate, you can feel confident that someone elses unethical decision wont cause you to lose everything. And, of course, the rental factor means that you can actually earn income from your investment. However, buying a home for investment purposes is very different from buying a primary residence, asserts David C. Hehman, co-chairman and CEO of EscapeHomes.com, an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of second homes and resort properties. Its a different process and you need different information. So, the first thing I would suggest is research, research, research. Know why you want to buy and what you want from the experience. Be realistic about both costs and expectations. And find a great realtor to walk you through the process. I fully agree with the Warren Buffet quote, An investors success is in direct proportion to the degree to which he or she understands the investment. So, get educated.. Get a good sense of the second home marketplace. The more you read, the more experts you talk to, the more you explore the marketplace, the more likely you are to make a smart decision.
After reading about second homes in the March issue (The Good Life, page 76), here are my thoughts about this market. After the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, another pattern has become more pronounced. In past years many of our clients building South Carolina vacation homes were from Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, as well as Boston. Since that terrible day we still see the people in this market building vacation homes, but more of them are doing so closer to home. Our Rhode Island office has seen an increase in vacation home business while our South Carolina office has seen a decrease. Owners would rather drive a few hours to their vacation home than have to fly there. As far as design trends are concerned, the vacation homes we design in Rhode Island ate definitely for the entire family and not just for the husband and wife, which is more common with our Southern projects. The vacation home communities in Rhode Island where weve worked are places that the same families have been going to for decades or generations. In South Carolina the communities are new, and there is not the same sense of attachment to the place or the same sense of community.

Chicken Four and a half million organic chickens were sold in Britain last year in the fastest growing area of the organic food market. All Soil Association-certified birds roam grassland in low density flocks of 500, or up to 2,000 in restricted cases. The EU currently allows as many as 9,000 organic poultry to a shed. Free range birds can be farmed in flocks of up to 12,000, while non- organic hens may be bred in groups of 40,000. Studies show that small flocks reduce stress-related behaviour where chickens pull out each others feathers. The extra land and labour required are reflected in the higher prices.
Organic FoodsAccording to regulations set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic foods must come from farms or ranches certified by a state or private agency that has been accredited by the USDA. Foods labeled 100 percent organic must contain only organically produced ingredients, excluding water and salt. Foods labeled organic must contain, by weight, at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients. Products meeting these requirements must display these terms on their principal display panel and may use the USDA seal and the seal or mark of certifying agents on packages and in advertisements. Foods labeled made with organic ingredients must contain, by weight, at least 70 percent organic ingredients. Up to three separate organic ingredients may be listed on the principal display label, and a certifying agents seal or mark may be used on the package. The use of a USDA seal is prohibited, however. Livestock can be certified organic if they have been raised on organic foodstuffs for over one year.
Organic foods are widely marketed as healthier and better for you than non-organic foods. Yet there is simply no evidence whatsoever that a diet high in or exclusively of organic foods is any healthier for you than a diet of regular food. Despite the near total lack of evidence, the number of so-called experts extolling the health benefits of organic foods is large and, arguably, growing. But so is the number of credentialed, independent scientists, scientific organizations, and other experts that have expressed an opinion on the merits (or lack thereof) of organic foods.

At this low ebb in Tory fortunes, the Westminster council scandal hands another hefty piece of ammunition to Labour. The auditors conclusions will be matched with those of Sir Richard Scotts Iraq report. Put crudely, its a message that says the Tories cannot be trusted with power. More subtly - since both Scott and Magill were called in to tidy up after that late Eighties period of Tory hegemony when arrogant politicians gave little thought to the niceties of proper procedure - the lesson is that the more politicians feel they walk on water, the more dangerous they get. The Westminster affair is also to do with amateurism and political paranoia. Lady Porter was always an exotic. She came late to politics and never really understood, let alone sympathised with, the local democratic system. Her fate confirms, perhaps unhappily, that modern British politics is a place for specialists alone. As a local authority, the City of Westminster has a specific character, from which one should not generalise too far. It is the only council to have a permanent Security Service liaison. (Westminsters permission is needed to allow MI5 to check manholes on the routes around Buckingham Palace.)Letting City Hall in Victoria fall into Labour hands seemed akin to giving away the Crown Jewels.

Affordable housing. Low cost of living. High quality of life. The combination of these three things sets the Fort Wayne housing market apart. Add a wide variety of options into the equation and you have a truly good value for your housing dollars. A recent home price analysis by the National Association of REALTORS(R) revealed that the Fort Wayne housing market is in excellent shape, with a potential for significant housing equity gains, a very favorable home price-to-income ratio and an even better mortgage servicing cost-to-income ratio. The same report shows that the region added an estimated 15,000 new housing units in the past five years, approximately 12,000 of which were single-family dwellings. New developments continue to pop up in suburban areas surrounding the city. Conveniently located medical facilities, schools, libraries, parks, retail stores and restaurants add to the sense of community.

Johnston introduces, in its 610 and 770 Cyclone models, a quick response, gutter broom positioning control that rapidly deploys either or both gutter brooms to any lateral position chosen. A simple joystick commands the broom movement throughout its travel range including “hard to get” areas, and allows the operator to avoid obstacles without changing course. All this is accomplished with speed and precision and with no requirement far the operator to leave the cab. Some features included are: adjustable broom ground pressure from in-cab, a stainless steel long life hopper, and high-speed sweeping. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Ever wonder if all those never-need-cleaning gutter covers and devices really work? Take a crash course in gutter systems, and compare the pros and cons. The four most common gutter materials are aluminum, copper, galvanized steel, and plastic. Aluminum K-styles are the least expensive and wont rust. Copper is durable, but its also the most expensive. Steel gutters require a galvanized process and industrial coatings that can run up the cost. Stick components are generally plastic or vinyl. ROBERT MARTIN

The drama of mergers, acquisitions, downsizing, and the managed redirection of health care resources away from acute care hospitals and high-technology medicine has overshadowed another change in the contemporary health care culture (Duva, 1990; Edmonds Hallman, 1995; Gabel, 1997; Salmon, 1995). The purpose of this article is to discuss the growing interest in alternative health care and offer an explanation for this phenomenon. Alternative health care is not easily defined. Often it is explained by describing what it is not — the scientific practice of nursing or medicine as it has come to be understood in first world countries during this century. Physicians who are sympathetic to the movement say that alternative therapy encompasses a broad spectrum of practices and beliefs (Eisenberg et al., 1993), and reflects a holistic world view of health and illness that is outside the biomedical mainstream of medicine (Rauckhorst, 1997). Other writers compare and contrast traditional and alternative medicine as a way of defining its practice. Western medicine is specialized; alternative care is holistic. Scientific practice is evaluated by its outcomes and its coherence with protocols; alternative therapy is not in conformity with the standards of the medical community and is considered to be unorthodox. Little is known about its safety, efficacy, or effectiveness (Gevitz, 1988; Lohr, 1997; U.S. Congress, 1990). The science of medicine is taught and practiced in universities and hospitals; alternative care is not widely taught is U.S. medical or nursing schools and is generally unavailable in American hospitals (Eisenberg et al., 1993; Engebretson Wardell, 1993). Insurance companies and federal and state governments pay for traditional medical care. With few exceptions (acupuncture and chiropractic medicine), alternative therapy has not been included as a health benefit by health insurance companies (Eisenberg, 1997). Recently, however, Oxford Health Plans announced its intention to offer coverage for alternative health care and provided its enrollees with a list of providers and services (Oxford Launches, 1998). There is an elaborate certification and licensing system for health care providers and hospitals; the world of alternative therapy is unregulated and its practitioners are usually unlicensed and uncertified (Eisenberg, 1997).

Tobron Office Furniture announced that Jennifer Leotis has joined the firm as a sales assistant. She resides in Staten Island, N.Y.
Sticking with our makeover theme, you may want to think twice before you scrap your old office furniture. Rather than sending it off to a landfill, think sustainability instead. With that thought in mind, furniture-maker Haworth Inc. and students from Archeworks, Chicagos alternative design school, joined forces to devise a strategy for extending the life of office furniture by developing innovative uses for it once its traditional “end of life” has been reached. Among the furniture students creatfrom discarded systems panels and overhead storage bins were a toy box, a day bed, and a product called the Unit for Living (pictured), a piece that incorporates a bed, storage, and a desk.
Office Suppliers, Inc. has opened an office furniture outlet in the Orchard Hills Shopping Center, across the street from its headquarters and showroom near Maugans Avenue, north of downtown Hagerstown. It showcases a variety of new, gently used and discontinued home office and commercial furniture, as well as refurbished copiers and fax machines, said Rachel Stoops, who is managing the store. “All the furniture in the front of the store will be new, along with some barely used pieces that come from the main showroom. Some of the furniture in the warehouse will be from jobs we do, but not much is in the way of trade-ins.”

How do you market LASIK effectively if you dont have an excimer laser in your office? The answer practices from within your practice. I recently drove by a fellow optometrists office, which was adorned with a large sign that simply read, “LASIK.” What if a prospective patient called? The dialogue might go something like this: Caller: I saw your sign and I am interested in LASIK. Whos your surgeon? Receptionist: Oh, we dont have a surgeon. We provide the care before and after surgery. Well refer you outside for the procedure.
Is their care being taken out of your hands? As the public learns about the wonders of refractive surgery, advertisements boasting rockbottom prices for LASIK surgery are transforming some potential patients into sale-searching bargain hunters. Scores of patients have crossed the border to Canada, prompted by the favorable currency exchange rate. To add injury to insult, some patients are led to believe that the surgery fee covers your care!
Clear Vision Club (CVC) claims to be a consumer advocate to the LASIK consumer. According to the organization, it aims to educate, motivate and promote LASIK surgery through a free membership (based on candidacy criteria), an informative Web site and backend educational e-mails, which the consumer has requested. CVCs eBay page explains its screening criteria and claims to have leads for all areas of the country. The cost? Fifty dollars, although bidding for the item was closed at the time of publication. The page is available on eBay for a limited time only, so if you or a colleague are interested in looking into this, you might have to search the eBay Web site a bit to find this and/or similar offers.

- BLUE RAPIDS — Capital-Journal to host coffee — Topeka Capital-Journal staffers and columnists will be in Blue Rapids today to host the weekly Community Coffee. Columnists Jim Ramberg and Dick Snider will be on hand to answer questions and to listen to the comments of area residents. A group photo of those in attendance will be taken and published in Thursdays newspaper. The coffee will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Blue Valley Cafe. The Capital-Journal will pick up the tab for the coffee and doughnuts. The public is encouraged to attend.
Coffee houses have been regarded as cultural meeting places since the 17th century in western civilization when artists writers and political activists first started to meet and discuss topics of social interest over a cup of this stimulating drink. The poet Baudelaire in Paris in the 1840s described coffee as best served “black as night hot as hell and sweet as love.” Coffee seems always to have been part of the American landscape as it was a common feature on the chuckwagons of the prairie pioneers and cattle ranchers and in the break-rooms of companies and board rooms. Coffee is so popular in diners and roadside eateries that it is served almost as often as water. But for most of its history coffee was just coffee a commodity that was not associated with brand name or image. All that changed beginning in the 1980s as the result of a convergence of two trends. Americans looking for a socially-acceptable alternative to drug and alcohol intake were well-served by a proliferation of retailers eager to provide high-priced “gourmet” coffee to discriminating drinkers. Specialty shops such as Starbucks in Seattle and Peets Coffee in Berkeley have expanded to national chains whose popularity has eclipsed that of national brands such as Maxwell House and Folgers which spread across America in the fifties. In addition hundreds of independent cafeacute;s and coffee houses were founded in every major American city throughout the 1990s. In the Pacific Northwest–the capital of coffee consumption in America–drive-up espresso shacks line the roadsides providing a variety of coffee drinks to commuters willing to pay $3.50 for a 20-ounce Cafeacute; Mocha with a double shot of espresso. Even a small town like Snohomish Washington with a population of only 8000 boasts a dozen espresso shacks.

In 1775 Elizabeth, dowager countess of Home, hired the renowned architect Robert Adam to design and complete the interiors of her newly built house at 20 Portman Square, London (Fig. 1). (1) While this patron and commission may not be among the most prestigious of Adams long career, the finished house is widely regarded as one of the best examples of his interior design genius. Lady Home was an immensely rich Jamaican heiress whose fortune increased in 1734 with the death of her first husband, the Honorable James Lawes–the son of the British governor of Jamaica. Lady Home acquired her title through her short-lived second marriage in 1742 to the impoverished spendthrift William (d. 1761), eighth earl of Home, who had abandoned his first wife two years earlier. The new Lady Home became a colorful figure, affectionately known as the Queen of Hell, (2) in the somewhat disreputable social circles of London, and she was a close confidant and supporter of her niece-in-law Anne Horton (1743-1808), duchess of Cumberland. (3) In possession of her magnificent house, Lady Home could show off to the respectable elements of London society as well as provide herself and the Cumberlands with a showcase for their anti-court social set. Mike Ott of West Allis, Wis., was the lucky winner of a Dream House giveaway at the Wisconsin State Fair this summer. The winner in the annual event takes home the home, so to speak. Proceeds benefit Wisconsin Jobs Daughters. Ott has the choice of receiving the home valued at $350,000 or $150,000 cash. Fairgoers bought more than 30,000 tickets. Hair Dyes and Hair TreatmentsHair has no vital function in the human body but provides an outward sign of health and social communication. The history of hair coloring dates from ancient dynasties of Egypt and China where mineral and plant dyes were widely available to cosmeticians. Through the ages, women in particular have dyed their hair to hide grayness and to improve their appearance.
Hair, Beautiful hair On meeting someone, hair style and colour are often the salient features we notice, significantly influencing our first impression. Possibly because it resists decay after death, through the ages hair has come to symbolize love, strength and power.
Great poem and drawing, Allie! We hope you have lots of happy hair days!

Increasing concerns over homeland security issues have put ever-higher levels of pressure on state governments that are often too beleaguered and too cash-strapped to have any hope of keeping up with security suggestions and initiatives from the feds. “New Hampshire is unique compared to a lot of states. There is a lot of security and high-tech expertise, particularly in Nashua, Manchester and Portsmouth,” Steinberg notes. “In addition, were a small state where people and companies are closely connected. Its the small boat versus the ocean liner theory. Were small enough to move quickly and take on a wide range of security issues, from power systems to healthcare records, throughout the state. We could become one of the examples that other, larger states look to when they are doing their own security initiatives.” Steinberg knew it would take an organized group effort to address the security needs of the state, as well as the help and backing of a major organization, as technology security and cybersecurity werent his only concerns. An effort to improve statewide security and meet homeland security needs will require coordination of security guard providers and perimeter fence manufacturers, too, among many others, he stresses.
In the past, unauthorized entry was the biggest threat to building security. As the tragic events of and following Sept. 11, 2001, have made all too clear, threats to security have become more varied and sophisticated. In developing a security program today, facility executives must also consider the threats of bombs and biological and chemical weapons. The results of this assessment will allow facility executives to design and implement security measures in concentric zones, from the interior of the building outward to the public domain.
SECURITY: Phishing–the practice of using fake emails from banks and ISPs to trick Netizens into giving out financial details like bank account numbers, login IDs and passwords–is rapidly replacing spare and even Net worms as one of the biggest security worries for e-commerce firms in the Asia Pacific. In fact, according to research firm IDC, phishing has become one of the fastest-growing non-violent crimes among banks in the region in recent months. The success of e-commerce businesses depends on consumers confidence in purchasing online, Yu says. It only takes one major security breach to destroy the trust and relationship that has taken years to build between customers and vendors.

By Kasha Stoll A blue-collar worker with a high school diploma or GED is more likely to smoke than a college-educated white-collar employee. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 37 percent of men and 33 percent of women in blue-collar jobs smoke. The numbers for white-collar workers are 21 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
Smoke: Santa Clarita could become the next city in which smokers wont be able to light up on outdoor city property. City officials are mulling over a proposal to ban smoking at city parks. Smoking is currently banned inside all city buildings, but not at parks or athletic fields.

FORD are testing an info system to aid parking. Drivers can phone a computer, wired to recognise the cars when they arrive, to tell it to reserve them a space.
Cars. Dir. John Lasseter. Released by Disney-Pixar. Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, and Larry the Cable Guy. 116 min. Video release: Nov. 2006. This film is visually entrancing (the sequences set at the track are sufficiently stimulating, chaotic and noisy with furious angle cuts to engage your basic attention-deficient kid) and often slyly comic (because there are only cars in this world, tractors do the work of farm animals and one popular prank is tipping over tractors) and generously garnished with characters that can be personable (the wonderfully naive beat-up pick up voiced by Larry the Cable Guy is as endearing and appealing as any Disney character since Thumper). But it lectures, often heavy handedly, about a lost America, dated here to the mid-1950s, a world of caring neighbors, a slow down, small-town world of simple pleasures like a slow drive in the country, where love was expressed in batted eyes and stammering speech. Granted that 1950s is a confection of Hollywood and perhaps it is an exercise in pointless nostalgia to mourn something that never really existed, it works here. When Lightning McQueen, the showboat hot-shot race car (Owen Wilson), loses a big race (his daredevil antics on the track cost him the victory) and decides brashly to eschew his racing team to head alone to the season-ending showdown race for the Piston Cup, he gets lost on a stretch of back highway, the mythic Route 66, in the deserts somewhere on the way to California. He ends up in a lonesome town, Radiator Springs, itself a cross of intersections bypassed long ago by the interstate and now settling into dust. When Lightning ends up impounded in the town and then sentenced by an unforgiving old-timer judge (Paul Newman) to community service–he must repave the stretch of broken-down highway his race car has damaged–the young kid comes to understand, slowly, the simple values that his media-driven celebrity lifestyle and virtually impenetrable narcissism have never shown him: friendship, trust, honesty. Happily, the judge turns out to be himself a relic of past racing glory and with his help and his patient (although wonderfully gruff) instruction the kid learns a thing or two about handling cars. When Lightning returns to race, he does so richly educated in the importance of tradition, the value of modesty, and the sterling quality of friendship. I would not dream of spoiling the end of the film, but in the end we learn, as with all truly significant sports films, what happens in competition pales next to the significance of what happens off field. With Lightnings newfound sensitivity, the town finds its way to a renaissance that is as believable as it is heartwarming.

Pool testing to ensure proper sanitation is absolutely vital in minimizing disease risk. All water activity venues must be tested - not only public wading and swimming pools, but also hot tubs, medical treatment pools, ceremonial pools, spas, whirlpools, and water parks. Evaluating these facilities for environmental health compliance includes checking the circulation, filtration, and water treatment records; the ancillary safety equipment; diving boards; ladders; and, most importantly, the quality of the water. Microbiological sampling often follows a negative test for residual disinfecting agents such as chlorine or bromine. Additional evaluations related to water cleanliness need to be performed, including evaluations of pH, total alkalinity, and chlorine stabilizer. It goes without saying that for a pool to be safe for bathing, water chemistry, temperature, and turbidity, as well as mechanical systems and deck equipment, must be properly maintained. Balancing the chemical parameters is also important; factors such as water hardness can affect the life expectancy of pool equipment such as ladders (through corrosion or scaling), and decaying equipment can, in turn, affect safety. We have found several portable test kits on the market that allow for the testing of the basic parameters such as pH and residual disinfectant loading. More complete test kits measure pH, disinfectant residuals (chlorine and bromine), total alkalinity, calcium hardness, acid demand, base demand, and cyanuric acid. These expanded kits have a definite advantage in monitoring overall water quality. Test kits use one of two methods to assess residual chlorine levels in swimming pool waters: the orthotolidine (OT) method or the N,N-diethyl-P-phenylenediamine (DPD) method. With the OT method, the chlorine residual is indicated by a yellow color, but the shade of yellow that indicates free chlorine is very fleeting, and the end point is a darker color that represents total (free and spent) chlorine. Most people cannot distinguish free chlorine with this test. Also, OT is a carcinogen. DPD tests indicate chlorine with a characteristic pink color and more reliably distinguish free chlorine (the active sanitizer) from total chlorine (which includes spent sanitizer). For this reason, most health codes specify DPD testing.
Swimming PoolIn the design and manufacturing of pre-fabricated aboveground pools, the cost of fabrication continues to be a major concern. Pools have to be manufactured in a variety of styles and sizes to accommodate the available space requirements of the customer and the variety of components necessary for manufacturing is quite large. Designs that can incorporate this flexibility and reduce the necessary inventory required to accommodate a variety of sizes and structures have begun to arrive in the above ground swimming pool manufacturing marketplace creating easier systems to erect without sacrificing stability.Above ground swimming pools have an exterior wall of machined sheet metal construction formed into a continuous circular or oval shape. Support or reinforcing posts are located around the perimeter of the pool and serve to strengthen and maintain the pool wall in the desired position. Conventionally, various components make up these post assemblies and may include upper and lower rails for engaging and covering the upper and lower edges of the metal pool wall, some form of plate connectors which serve to mount the vertical posts in position and which may also be used to secure sections of ledges around the top of the pool wall. Some form of cap is usually fastened to finish the top of the post assembly.
Children love swimming pools. When used with proper supervision, swimming pools are safe. But when children decide to use swimming pools without supervision, they are dangerous. Each year over 250 children under five years old drown in backyard swimming pools. Most die because no one is watching them. Many of the children accidentally fall in, and no one is there to rescue them. Consumer Reports, 6/97 pp. 8-9.

Research has consistently shown that the earlier a physician can diagnose a tumor, the greater the chance of effectively treating the patient against cancer and increasing their chance of survival. Molecular imaging is being recognized as the next revolution in cancer research and is paving the way for patient-specific imaging evaluation based on molecular and genetic markers, said Basilion. By collaborating with over 40 additional cancer researchers at universities and hospitals worldwide, the NFCR Center for Molecular Imaging at Case will provide a new and vital imaging and diagnostic research platform for scientists in the early diagnosis and clinical development of novel anticancer drugs. The Case center joins other NFCR Centers established at Oxford, Yale, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of California-Berkeley, Dana Farber Cancer Center, University of Arizona, Freie Universitat Berlin, and the Institute of Medicinal Biotechnology in Beijing to form a broader international collaborative network of top researchers. This new initiative marks one of the first research centers in the United States dedicated solely to cancer molecular imaging, said Sujan Ba, Ph.D., chief scientific officer for the NFCR. We expect that the discoveries we make will hasten the development of safe, effective treatments for patients and allow researchers to more rapidly and thoroughly evaluate the benefits and limitations of new experimental therapies.
Efforts to resolve differences that have arisen surrounding a planned $1.7 billion buyout by WellPoint Health Networks of Health Systems International (both Woodland Hills, California) were declared unsuccessful in mid-December, and representatives of the two organizations were meeting regarding possible termination of the deal announced last spring. The merger would have created the largest publicly traded managed health care organization in the United States, with more than 4.4 million members. For additional acquisitions and agreements, see Table 9 and Table 11.

Protech Powder Coatings Nuvocoat is Protechs line of UV-curabLe powder coatings, offered in a wide range of colors and textures. Nuvocoat powders show excellent chemical, stain and scratch resistance, the company says, and are formulated to provide a durable finish.
When cleaning a powder-coated weapon, you have to be very selective as to what cleaner you use. Many solvents will dissolve powder coatings. When preparing parts for powder coating, it is recommended that the parts be heated to 220 degrees for 15 minutes and allowed to cool, prior to application of the powder. This allows any moisture that may be trapped in cavities or pores to flash off before it is painted so the gas doesnt blow holes through the coating after the powder melts. As with all coatings, a phosphate conversion prior to application is strongly recommended, as this will enhance corrosion resistance and promote adhesion of the coating. For reliability, corrosion resistance, and ease of cleaning, I personally recommend thin-film polymer or ceramic coatings, which can be applied to all surfaces, including threads.
Euro Quality Coatings have many years experience in applying decorative and functional coatings for the rail Industry. As a supplier to the UKs major train and rolling stock manufacturer, we are well versed in the needs to supply a comprehensive process which meets current and future legislation. Processes offered include low smoke and flame powder coatings and high visibility coatings for the partially sighted. Euro Quality Coatings are an approved applicator of Bonalux (Grafaway) anti graffiti coatings. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

BEEF is beef once its on the grill, yet true connoisseurs believe that the breed of cattle has much to do with the flavor and texture of the meat. Here are some of the more common species of cattle that are bred both here and abroad. Matsuzake beef is similar in breed and style, and is said to be even more superior in flavor.
By the Middle Ages, in Rottweil, Germany, these dogs had been crossed with local sheepdogs to create the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, the Rottweil Butchers Dog. Butchers used these dogs to drive and guard their livestock as it made its way on foot from town to town. In the 19th Century, cattle-driving became illegal in Germany and the Rottweiler suffered a decline in popularity until 1914 when they were once again brought into use for the war, which proved their physical and mental abilities. The breed entered the United States in the 1930s and was accepted into their Kennel Club in 1935, being accepted by the British Kennel Club the following year. They are one of the most powerful and strong dogs in the world for their size.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Three days after furniture-makers filed a petition seeking the imposition of antidumping duties of Chinese wood bedroom furniture, the CEO of Furniture Brands International, one of Americas largest furniture manufacturers, vowed to fight against it. Joe Dorn, of the Washington, DC, law firm King Spalding, represents the coalition and union. The day of the filing, Dorn said, The petition presents very compelling evidence of the serious injury suffered by the U.S. wood bedroom industry and its workers from a surge of unfairly priced imports from China. The petition states, Dumped imports were equal to 44 percent of the value of domestic production and 23 percent of the value of apparent domestic consumption in 2002. During January to June 2003, it says, dumped imports were equal to 67 percent of domestic production and 30 percent of apparent consumption. It also contends (The) petitioners net sales value decreased by 23 percent from 2000 to 2002, and by another 24 percent from the periods January to June 2002 (and) January to June 2003.
> Webb Furniture of Galax, VA, announced it will close its bedroom furniture plant and lay off more than 300 employees. Webb Furniture President Lee Houston attributed the companys competitive problems to Chinese furniture imports. Webb Furniture was a founding member of the American Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Legal Trade, which successfully challenged for antidumping duties against Chinese wooden bedroom furniture makers.

Wedding Photography–Creative Techniques for Lighting and Posing By Rick Ferro 152 pages, CD $45.22 Rick Ferro was the senior Wedding Photographer at Walt Disney World. He is now Director of Photography for KK Video and Film Productions in Orlando, Florida. He has shot over 10,000 weddings. Much of the practical information is of use primarily to the professional-timing, pricing, the appropriate grouping and the like. But the illustrations and the comments on the illustrations are of general usefulness. Two aspects are particularly striking about wedding photography as presented here. First, the participants are for the most part more concerned with other matters than the photographs, so the photographer has to seize the moment, and occasionally act as stage-manager of the event. The advice here would apply equally to an amateur trying to get some nice shots of an informal picnic, or family party. Secondly, the wedding itself usually makes a visual composite of the people and the building–characteristically the church–both of which will be important for the memories stimulated by the finished photos. Bridal dress tends to be light and flowing–churches tend to be dark and are certainly solid. To let the two play off each other and capture the key emotions are the task of the wedding photographer, and also any amateur photographer taking pictures against an architectural background–typically, perhaps, travel photos–”My friend in front of the Tower of London!” This text is filled with useful hints for placing and lighting, and the illustrations–especially those of cloisters–are admirable and moving.

NOT JUST TOURISTS * Friends of Cuba in the Toronto area who wonder what they can take to help out when they travel to Cuba have a practical new possibility. A non-profit, volunteer-run organization called “Not Just Tourists Toronto” will send you on your way with a suitcase of medicines and medical supplies destined for a doctor in the area you plan to visit. The projects start-up was assisted by donations from the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), and the United Steelworkers (USW). In its first year of operation, project volunteers collected, packed and sent more than 1,000 kilograms of medicines and medical supplies abroad with tourists. In 2005, the United Steelworkers donated space for the group and the amount of donations sent rose to 2,161 kilos. Bill Howes, one of the projects founders, now offers an e-mail course designed to help people in other Canadian cities and abroad to develop Not Just Tourist projects in their own communities. (He is a retired executive assistant to the president of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council.) As a result, NJT projects have started in Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa. For more information contact Howes by sending an e-mail to: njt@njttoronto.ca.

Norms Byrd, interior designer and artist, has been elected president of the San Diego chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers for the 2008-2009 term, which begins Oct. 1. Byrd has more than 21 years of experience in commercial and residential interior design, including five years as an independent contractor to Kachay Homes of Rancho Santa Fe where she designed interior architecture, cabinetry and detailing for custom homes.
Sterling Ruby, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles Sterling Ruby is a cool name, a drag queen name, a British spys name. I dont know him, and hadnt heard of him before I saw his show at Marc Foxx. That doesnt matter because his show, Interior Designer, which looks at sexuality, namely transgendered people, and flirts with theoretical schizophrenia, requires only sympathy for his observations and the art he makes. Four delicately scratched and key carved Formica laminate monoliths, each 7 x 4 x 4 are at the center of Interior Designer. Their tinted surface has dirty spots, handprints, chips, and evidence of handling. They recall the laminate prefabs in the displays and dressing rooms found in department stores. In their material and dimension they suggest–and maybe desire to be–video booth jack off chambers.
