QUESTION: It is well known that literature reflects reality. Our current reality is quite illogical, chaotic, and hard to interpret. Is the mere existence of literature possible in a time such as ours?T. ASKAROV: All kinds of literature, including professional literature, will always exist. However, the question is what are the quality standards for the literature that we are talking about. After all, even the darkest periods of human history produced fine literature and high-quality art - remember the medieval era and others.True, currently the writers profession is not viewed as prestigious any more. But there are understandable and objective reasons for this development, which has become the sad reality of our spiritual existence. For one, the commercialization of social life around the globe has profoundly undercut the foundations of our customary spiritual sphere as it existed not so long ago. In those days, as we know, peoples need for intellectual products - including the need for fictional literature - was satisfied in many different ways: by state subsidies for the work of artists and writers, by funding for cultural institutions, and by generous rewards for the most loyal and gifted supporters of the political system, to mention but several measures - in other words, by a certain consensus between the “social order”(1) expressed by society and the willingness of artists to respond adequately to the establishments attention.And what about now? The situation has changed completely. Today no writer can rely on anything but his own potential and opportunity. Only those survive who are successful and dexterous and whom fate luckily rewards with rich sponsors of the kind that might be called the “New Kyrgyz” - analogous to the “New Russians.”(2) Be that as it may, a potentially fatal crisis in our national cultural consciousness lies at hand. Two or three years ago our venerable author Nasyrdin Baytemyrov(3) wrote with great sadness in a poem that many Kyrgyz literati who were the rulers of mens minds only yesterday are today suffering a pitiful existence, begging for money on the streets. It may be that this poet has laid it on too thick and generalized from single facts too much. Yet is it not still the essential truth of life that inspires the masters of the word with vital impressions? Baytemyrov was talking about exactly this essence of real life, which he knows from the inside and better than many others.At the same time, of course, and in spite of everything said, literature can still exist in this timeless period of ours and does indeed continue to exist. Now as always, albeit rarely, novellas, novels, and poems are published which somehow fill the long, empty, gaping niches in our bookstores. If we imagine the desirable literary process as a powerfully flowing river, what we see in actuality is instead a quietly murmuring stream, incapable of quenching the thirst of thousands upon thousands who are exhausted by the spiritual void, the intellectual drought, the lack of faith, and the moral indifference. Moreover, the rare publications of prose and poetry do not become events in cultural life as they used to in former years. They do not evoke any broad reader response or critical reaction. Can it be that the quality of these works does not reach the level that Kyrgyz literature had achieved in the past? In any case, the transition from socialism to a market economy has become a transition for Kyrgyz literature as well. However, I would not want to paint the present situation as a doomed one. For example, one very recent fact is worth mentioning: on the eve of 1996 the president of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akayev, issued a decree granting presidential stipends to more than one hundred writers of our republic. The general public reacted positively to this good news.

Wavy hair, provided the waves are uniform and smooth, can also be quite shiny. There are shine sprays or leave-in conditioners which are mostly used on curly hair. They contain oils and oilicones, which in themselves help to reflect light. However to much of this type of product tends to coat the hair and attracts dust and dirt.

Biofield therapies form a subcategory of the domain of energy therapies, as defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Specific biofield therapies addressed in this article include Therapeutic Touch, Healing Touch, Polarity Therapy, Reiki, and Qigong. This article will identify core concepts in biofield therapies, review controlled trials of the use of biofield therapies with patients with cancer, describe the process of biofield therapies implementation in one cancer center, and suggest research to benefit not only patients with cancer but also family members and oncology professionals. Biofield therapies form a subcategory of energy therapies, one of the five complementary medicine domains defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). The terminology of biofield therapies is diverse because the practices that comprise the field have developed cross-culturally over thousands of years and, in recent decades, have been reformulated, taught, and practiced in a variety of ways. Terms in common use include energy healing, energy medicine, energy therapies, laying on of hands, and spiritual healing. Forms of practice found in North American healthcare systems include Healing Touch (HT), Polarity Therapy (PT), Qigong, Reiki, and Therapeutic Touch (TT) (see Figure 1). Two of the modalities were formulated specifically in the context of nursing: TT in the 1970s by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, at New York University, and HT in the 1980s by Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, in Colorado. Krieger worked with healer Dora Kunz to develop and teach TT, a formal procedure for assessment and treatment of the human biofield. Mentgen compiled a range of biofield healing interventions from her own practice and from other healers and developed HT as a training program. PT was developed in the 1940s and 1950s by Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND, who combined aspects of ancient healing practice with information from osteopathy and chiropractic. Qigong and Reiki are modalities of Japanese and Chinese origin, respectively. See Figure 2 for resources to learn more about the different types of biofield therapies. Consolidation through mergers and acquisitions in the steel industry is likely to result in higher steel prices for automotive producers. Already in the last year, companies like United States Steel Corp. and AK Steel Holding Corp. raised contract prices on steel as a falloff in industry capacity and tariffs on imports of foreign steel helped prices rebound from 30-year lows. For years, U.S. steel companies, which supply most of the steel used by Big Three automakers were unable to raise contract prices as competition from cheap foreign imports kept steel prices low. The tables turned last year, however, as steel prices rose when several bankrupt steelmakers liquidated — removing a chunk of industry capacity — and the federal government slapped hefty tariffs on imports of foreign steel. The auto industry has since condemned the tariffs, saying the added costs have forced companies to cut jobs and consider importing steel from countries exempt from the tariffs. Ana Lopes, director of government relations for the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association, which represents the automotive parts industry, said steelmakers have “unilaterally voided terms or prices of many steel contracts” as the steel costs rose anywhere from 20 to 60 percent in the last year.

One possible health outcome that may be adversely affected by intentional weight loss is immune function. Natural killer (NK) cells, a subset of mononuclear cells, which are an important component of the immune system, lack antigen-specific receptors and are capable of killing cancer cells and virus-infected cells. The aim of a cross-sectional study was to investigate history of intentional weight loss and associations with NK cytotoxicity and lymphocyte subpopulations among healthy, overweight, postmenopausal women. It was hypothesized that repeated intentional weight loss may be associated with lower immune function measures. The subjects (n=114) were a subset of a female study population recruited for an exercise intervention trial. The subjects had to meet the following criteria: postmenopausal, age 50 to 75 years, in good health; sedentary; nonsmoking; and had been at a stable body weight for at least 3 months. Body weight and height was measured. The subjects completed a questionnaire that included the following question: “Within the last 20 years, when you were not pregnant or sick, did you ever lose 10 pounds or more on purpose?” In other questions, women were queried regarding how often they had lost between 120 lb and 19 lb, between 20 lb and 49 lb, 50 lb or more, and how long they had been within 10 lb of their current weight. Demographic information was obtained. Food frequency questionnaires were used to assess dietary intake and alcohol consumption. The use of nutritional supplements was ascertained. Flow cytometry was used to measure NK cytotoxicity at four effector-to-target (E:T) ratios and four enumerating phenotyping lymphocytes. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate associations between weigh loss within the past 20 years and current immune function. Women who reported ever intentionally losing > 10 lbs were found to have lower measured NK cytotoxicity than those who did not (24.7% [+ or -] 12.1% vs. 31.1% [+ or -] 14.7%, respectively, at E:T 25:1; P = .01). Additionally, increasing frequency of previous intentional weight loss was associated with lower NK cytotoxicity (P = .003, trend). As an independent predictor, longer duration of recent weight stability was associated with higher NK cytotoxicity (21.6% [+ or -] 11.9%, 24.4%[+ or -] 11.0%, and 31.9%[+ or -] 14.4% for <2,>2 to <5, and >5 years of weight stability, respectively; P = .0002, trend). The frequency of weight loss episodes was also associated with differences in the number and proportion of NK cells.

SAN DIEGO — New Jersey recently enacted life-settlement provider licensing requirements, and Life Settlement Solutions Inc., one of the nations premier sources of life-settlement funding, was among the first life-settlement providers to receive a license under the law. New Jersey issued Life Settlement Solutions viatical (life) settlement provider license Jan. 2, 2007. Life Settlement Solutions has done business in New Jersey since 2003, prior to life settlement transactions being regulated in that state. The state expanded its viatical settlement laws to include life settlements, effective Dec. 21, 2005. Prior to the enactment of the 2005 legislation, life-settlement companies were allowed to conduct business in the state without licensing requirements. The new law provided for a transitional provision that permitted life-settlement providers previously conducting life settlements in the state to continue doing so while their license applications were pending, so long as the application was filed within 30 days following the effective date of the act. Life Settlement Solutions application was filed within that 30-day period, so there has been no interruption in its doing business in New Jersey. “The issuance of Life Settlement Solutions license in New Jersey is significant because it recognizes our company as officially approved by the states division of insurance as a formally licensed settlement provider,” said Larry Simon, president and founder of Life Settlement Solutions Inc. “We are proud of our history of licensing approvals throughout the country, and our unblemished regulatory and compliance track record.
